The Hope diamond is known to be the largest blue diamond in the world. It weighs 45.52 carats (9.104 g; 0.3211 oz). It was removed from a sculpted statue of a Goddes from an ancient temple of Bharat by some foreigner. The stolen diamond from Bharat was taken to France. Finally, King Louis XIV of France bought it from a French traveller in 1668, before re-cutting it and surrounding it with other diamonds. It was stolen in 1792 and re-cut with the largest section of the diamond appearing under the name 'The Hope' in an 1839 gem catalogue from the Hope banking family. The diamond then went through many owners. Then, in 1949 New York gems merchant Harry Winston purchased it. After owning for 9 years he donated it in 1958 to the Smithsonian Museum in the United States, for exhibition, where one can see it at present.
